A bit ugly and off balance, but I made a couple baskets out of old straws. Learned a lot about how to manipulate the material, so in teh future I should be able to do it better. Thinking of ‘pre-flattening’ the straws to try and make them get tighter in on the weave and not toss the pattern into disarray.
Oh well, good practice!!!
My second Onion basket!! Made in about 3 hours, start to finish, including times of seeting back in water to re-soak. Got the technique down a little better and made a few mods in the process of my own, trying to figure out the different things I can do with this medium. Looking into some natural dyes for coloring, so I hope to share some of those attempts (as well as more basketry) in the future!!
Just wove my first basket with reed (#3 round). Tried making an onion basket, had fun (and frustration) trying to get the technique down and get the sides formed, as well as finish the rim. Not bad for the first attempt, if I do say so myself!!
And I gave up on the handle idea.
90% of the way done with my little egg basket and the plastic ring I was using in the frame broke. I was soooo mad!! Until I realized, I can fix anything with junk!!
I cut an old wind chime in half, and used that to bridge the break, clamped it so it was tight and managed to carry on till the end. Once again, a garage full of saved ‘trash’ gave me the supplies to both make the project, and fix it when needed.
